In Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, there are over 200 temples dedicated to Lord Shiva, with Kedarnath being the most important. According to legend, after the Pandavas won the Kurukshetra war, they felt guilty for killing their relatives and sought Lord Shiva’s forgiveness. Shiva avoided them and, while escaping, took refuge in Kedarnath in the form of a buffalo.

When the Pandavas followed him, Shiva vanished into the ground, leaving his hump behind at Kedarnath. His other parts appeared at four different places: his arms at Tungnath, his face at Rudranath, his belly at Madmaheshwar, and his hair and head at Kalpeshwar. Together, these five sites are known as Panch Kedar.

The Kedarnath Temple stands impressively on a plateau surrounded by snow-capped peaks. It was originally built in the 8th century by Jagad Guru Adi Shankaracharya, near an older temple built by the Pandavas. The inner walls are adorned with depictions of deities and mythological scenes, and a large statue of Nandi the bull guards the entrance.

The temple’s architecture is remarkable, made from large, well-cut grey stone slabs, raising questions about how these heavy stones were moved centuries ago. It has a Garbha Griha for worship and a Mandap for gatherings. Inside, a conical rock formation is worshipped as Lord Shiva in his Sadashiva form.
